In late February, Dot Connector Studio’s Jessica Clark led a workshop on social media using the Impact Pack at PhillyCAM‘s Digital Media Literacy Academy. Albert Hong of Generocity provides more details on the academy, which is a five-month fellowship in the first half of 2018 designed to teach participants media literacy concepts, which they’ll then pass on through instructional videos designed to be shown at teach-in workshops throughout the city. The videos that fellows produce will address topics including media ownership and policy, understanding the internet, fake news and social media.
Helyx Chase, technology manager and production assistant at the Media Mobilizing Project, explains that the academy aims to arm participants—who come from organizations all over the city such as the Free Library of Philadelphia, Black Lives Matter Philadelphia, the AME church, and the Brewerytown Civic Association—with digital literacy skills so they can bring those skills back to their communities.
Participants found the cards handy, and used them to talk about how they use social media platforms in their work and lives. You can learn more about the cards and purchase your own deck here.
