In the last quarter of 2017, Jessica Clark worked alongside Kelly Born of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation to organize a webinar series on how funders can support projects aimed at addressing misinformation and disinformation.
The first webinar in October examined how to create news that audiences can trust. The second webinar in November explored how social media is being used to spread propaganda and disinformation. And the final webinar in December addressed how people absorb information and what can be done to correct falsehoods and improve critical thinking about media.
The first webinar included:
- Sarah Alvarez of Outlier Media, David Bornstein of Solutions Journalism Network, Emily Goligoski of Membership Puzzle Project, Joy Mayer of Trusting News, and Josh Stearns of Democracy Fund
The second webinar included:
- Jonathan Albright of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism, Elizabeth Christopherson and Jonathan Kartt of the Rita Allen Foundation, Nate Persily of Stanford University, and Josh Tucker of NYU’s Social Media and Political Participation Lab
The final webinar included:
- Eric Newton of Cronkite News, Brendan Nyhan of Dartmouth College, and Tom Rosenstiel of the American Press Institute
MIF will continue to focus on misinformation topics in 2018 at events such as their annual Media Impact Forum.
